Community-reported approval windows
OPT processing time by category and path
These values are calendar days from the applicable reported clock start to an approval—not a promise of when a specific case will finish. The last column shows all timelines in each modeled group; only completed approvals contribute to the approval window. Card delivery is shown separately so an approval date is not mistaken for a card-in-hand date.
| Case group | Processing path | Approval window | After approval to card | Approvals in range | Group reports |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Initial OPT | regular | 148–175 days | 8–11 days | 150 | 655 approvals / 1,015 reports |
| Initial OPT | premium | 31–35 days | 8–10 days | 250 | 1,320 approvals / 1,632 reports |
| STEM OPT | regular | 180–183 days | 7–10 days | 150 | 188 approvals / 343 reports |
| STEM OPT | premium | 33–43 days | 8–12 days | 232 | 232 approvals / 293 reports |
Approval range: 50th–90th percentile of up to 150 Regular or 250 Premium approvals in a 365-day lookback. Card range: 25th–75th percentile of reported approval-to-card intervals.

What these processing times mean
One number cannot tell you whether your OPT case is on track
A processing-time figure is a comparison point, not an individual case-status service. The USCIS public tool asks for a form, category, and office based on your receipt notice. OPT Watcher takes a different view: it compares community timelines with the same broad OPT category and path so you can plan an approval and EAD window around your own dates.
The current file contains 3,303 imported timelines, including 2,411 reported approvals. The model excludes anomalous date chains and user-submitted records without an original source link. This is a snapshot—not a daily or live USCIS feed. Regular groups also contain cases still pending, so a range can move as the next outcomes are reported.
To estimate your dates, use the calculator below. If you want the milestones explained step by step, open the OPT timeline guide. If the question is whether an expedited path fits your deadline, review the Premium Processing decision page.

OPT Processing Time FAQ
What is the current OPT processing time?+
It depends on OPT category and processing path. In the community snapshot dated Oct 2, 2026, the reported Regular approval planning window is 148–175 days for Initial OPT and 180–183 days for STEM OPT. Premium reports are shown separately below. These are community-derived ranges, not USCIS service commitments.
Is this an official USCIS processing-time result?+
No. The table on this page is based on community-reported timelines retained with source links. USCIS publishes its own estimates by form category and office; check the official USCIS processing-time tool for the government benchmark that applies to your receipt notice.
Does OPT Watcher show the latest receipt date USCIS is approving?+
No. This version does not publish a live receipt-date cutoff or read individual USCIS case statuses. It shows dated cohort ranges and lets you compare your own filing date with those ranges.
Are pending cases included in these OPT processing ranges?+
The displayed approval window is calculated from recent reported approvals, while the sample count also shows the wider group, including pending reports. Many Regular cases remain pending, so the later edge can change as more outcomes are reported.
How often is this estimate updated?+
The displayed evidence uses a snapshot captured on Oct 2, 2026. It is not a live feed and should not be described as updated daily. Always confirm time-sensitive case information with USCIS.
