Case Was Received
- What it means
- USCIS has recorded your application. A receipt notice identifies the case and its received date. This is the start of the application timeline, rather than an approval.
- Your next step
- Keep the receipt notice, check that your account is linked to the correct case, and use the USCIS received date when estimating your timeline.
- Timing
- For post-completion OPT, the Oct 2, 2026 community snapshot places Regular received-to-approval planning ranges at 148–175 calendar days. STEM and Premium have separate ranges in our processing-time guide.
Fingerprint / Biometrics Update
- What it means
- USCIS is reporting a fingerprint or other biometrics step. Depending on the case, it may schedule an appointment or reuse biometrics it already has. Not every OPT applicant sees this stage.
- Your next step
- Read the actual notice. Attend an appointment if one is required; a biometrics reuse update does not by itself mean approval.
- Timing
- There is no separate biometrics-to-OPT-approval range in our current dataset. Keep using the received-date estimate as context.
Case Is Being Actively Reviewed
- What it means
- Your application is in review. This status does not establish an approval date or reveal how many checks remain.
- Your next step
- Check your account for notices or requests. If you have a planned job start, compare it with your estimated EAD arrival window.
- Timing
- Review has no fixed countdown. Use the estimate for your OPT category and processing path; a record timestamp alone cannot predict a decision.
Case Was Approved
- What it means
- USCIS reports approval of your I-765. Approval and delivery of the physical EAD are separate milestones.
- Your next step
- Read the approval notice, confirm your mailing address, and watch for card-production and mailing updates. For employment planning, check your EAD dates and the rules that apply to your category.
- Timing
- The Oct 2, 2026 post-completion OPT Regular cohort reports 8–11 calendar days from approval to card arrival. This is a community range, not a shipping guarantee.
Card Is Being Produced / Card Was Produced
- What it means
- USCIS is reporting production of your EAD. Printing a card does not mean it has reached the postal service or your address.
- Your next step
- Look for a mailing update and any tracking information in your official account. Keep your employer informed if your start date is close.
- Timing
- Our dataset measures approval-to-card arrival, rather than a separate production-to-mailing interval. Use your actual approval date in the case tracker.
Card Was Mailed / Picked Up by USPS
- What it means
- USCIS reports that your EAD has entered the mailing stage. A postal tracking number may be provided.
- Your next step
- Check tracking on the postal service website and confirm the delivery address. The carrier tracking record is the most useful source for the remaining delivery steps.
- Timing
- Use the carrier estimate when one is available. Our community data does not provide a reliable mailing-to-door countdown.
Card Was Delivered
- What it means
- The tracking record reports delivery. Check that you actually have the card and review the name, category, and validity dates printed on it.
- Your next step
- If the card is missing, check the carrier record and follow USCIS instructions for a card reported delivered but not received. Once you have it, coordinate employment verification with your employer.
- Timing
- This completes the card-delivery timeline. Employment eligibility depends on the applicable authorization and validity dates, not the delivery label alone.
Request for Evidence (RFE)
- What it means
- USCIS is requesting additional evidence before continuing its decision. The notice identifies what is needed and the response deadline.
- Your next step
- Read the full notice, assemble the requested evidence, and respond by its stated deadline. Speak with your DSO or qualified adviser if you need help interpreting the request.
- Timing
- Use the deadline in your notice. An RFE can change the case timeline and Premium clock; we do not apply an ordinary approval forecast to an outstanding RFE.
Response to USCIS’ Request for Evidence Was Received
- What it means
- USCIS acknowledges receiving your response. This update confirms receipt of the response; it is not an approval decision.
- Your next step
- Save the acknowledgement and check subsequent notices. If you are using Premium, confirm the applicable clock start or restart from official case information.
- Timing
- Timing after an evidence response varies by case. Use your official notices and confirmed Premium clock dates to follow the next step.
Case Was Denied / Withdrawn / Closed
- What it means
- A final or administrative action is recorded. These outcomes have different implications; the decision notice explains which one applies.
- Your next step
- Read the decision notice for reasons and any available next steps or deadlines. Discuss the effect on your plans with your DSO or qualified counsel.
- Timing
- Follow the dates in the official notice. An approval or card-delivery estimate does not apply to this stage.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check my I-765 case status?
Sign in to your USCIS account to read the official case status. To explore the dated history, copy your case JSON and open the free USCIS case tracker on OPT Watcher.
Is every I-765 case an OPT application?
No. I-765 is used for multiple employment-authorization categories. Post-completion OPT is C03B and STEM OPT is C03C. Choose the category on your notice before using OPT-specific timing estimates.
Can I start work when my I-765 is approved?
An approval label alone is not enough to determine work eligibility. Check the authorization, validity dates, and documentation rules for your category with your DSO and employer. STEM extension situations can differ from an initial OPT application.
Does every OPT case show all of these statuses?
No. Some steps may be omitted, combined, reused, or reported later. Missing biometrics or a production update does not prove an error. Read your notices and use your actual case history.
